Course Description
This course traces the development of the United States from pre-contact to the present. Students will examine political, social, economic, and cultural developments that have shaped American society and identity. Using the historical inquiry process, students will analyze primary and secondary sources, investigate multiple perspectives, and explore issues related to citizenship, rights, and responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, historical significance, cause and consequence, continuity and change, and ethical dimensions of historical events. This course prepares students for further studies in history, law, political science, and global studies.

Course Assessment
Students will be provided with numerous and varied opportunities to demonstrate the full extent of their achievement of the curriculum expectations, across all four categories of the Achievement Chart. Progress will be monitored on an on-going basis using a variety of assessment tools, including written work, formal testing, quizzes, teacher-student communication, discussion boards and chat rooms.
As required by the Ministry of Education, students will be assessed in the four areas of the achievement chart. The suggested breakdown for this course is as follows:
